Born and raised in Hong Kong, Misato moved to the United States when she was 17 years old. As a Japanese-Chinese-American, her work contains a mixture of cultural influences and visual pursuits that serve as springboard for self-discovery— both of pictorial language as well as her heritage. From collage, drawing, printmaking, to photography, she uses the mediums interchangeably to provoke curiosity and surprise in her own approach to painting.
PAINTING IS WHAT I TURN TO FOR REST AND DISCOVERY. IT IS ALSO A PLACE WHERE I DEVELOP SENSITIVITY— TO SELF, TO THE ENVIRONMENT, AND TO THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF BEING PRESENT AND ALIVE. MY SUBJECTS VARY FROM FIGURE, LANDSCAPE, STILL LIFE, TO EVERYTHING BEYOND AND IN BETWEEN. RHYTHM, TEMPERATURE, PICTURE PLANE, GEOMETRY, AND COLOR ALL PLAY A ROLE IN CREATING PICTORIAL FORCE. ULTIMATELY, PAINTING TEACHES ME HOW TO LIVE PURPOSEFULLY WITH QUESTIONS AND EMBRACE SOLITUDE AND BEAUTY.
